Kennedy Music Nuts and Bolts
At Kennedy, our music curriculum is Orff-Schulwerk and Kodály Inspired.
These practices and philosophies allow for student creation, movement, improvisation, and dramatic expression.
We provide a very concrete, hands-on music making through instrumental experience.
We have our own melodic and rhythmic language that makes music creation and performance accessible to at all ages; every student is capable and able to be a performer, a composer, and a contributing member of an ensemble.

Kodály & Orff
Carl Orff and Zoltan Kodály: two innovators in the field of music education.
Both of these gentlemen created philosophies that embrace a hands on, jump-right-on-in approach to music. We sing songs and play games; after that, we have enough of a foundation to analyze what it is we've been doing. That leads the way to using those new skills for creation and application in new ways - It's whole/part/whole learning, which is how kids naturally learn about their world. If you want to learn more about Carl Orff and Zoltan Kodály (because there's way more to it than this), I recommend these links: AOSA - American Orff Schulwerk Association OAKE- Organization of American Kodály Educators |
Rhythmic Skills
One half of reading and creating music is being able to read rhythmically - literally the long and short of music. When we start reading and performing rhythms, we use syllables to represent the fractions of sound that they really are. So if you hear your child saying "ta" and "ti-ti," they're not only "scatting," they're reading rhythms.
Melodic SkillsNot only do we engage in singing ever class period, but we are also able to compose melodically, too!
We use the Curwen Hand Signs to help guide our voices and we are able to read and create music on staff. Instrumental Skills
We use a variety of instrument - all grades are exposed to percussion instruments. In the very early stages of Kindergarten, Kennedy trains kids in the basic handling and playing of non-pitched instruments (i.e. drums), and as they progress, we make our way to more complex instruments, including the pitched Orff Instruments (e.g. xylophones).
